Planning

We've got a few things going on around here - and I'm trying to plan but also not over plan and drive everyone nuts. And since it's never a good idea to keep all these things bottled up, you, my lucky readers, get a glimpse into my mind today.

Little Man and I are headed back to Boston in less than two weeks. My brother is graduating from high school, and we want to make sure we're there to celebrate. I've been planning visits with people while we're in the States and what we can do to help around the house for the celebrations - but I'm also planning on how to manage the Little Man by myself for the trip. Mark will be staying in Tilburg as the end of the academic year keeps him awfully busy, and while I've done air travel with the Little Man alone plenty of times (starting when he was 10 or 11 weeks old), I've never done such a long trip. Much of my preparation for this is a mental psych-up, and I'm going to cross my fingers that he continues his "good traveler" streak.

When we return, we dive right into plans to find a new home and move. Our current home is a rental, and the contract is up without the possibility to renew in August. We've already tried looking a bit, but the agencies I've talked to all say that it's too early to start. But once we get back, I'm starting up fresh and serious to find something - because I can't stand the idea of sitting in limbo.

I expect the next month or so will be interesting with all the travel and planning, but we'll be plodding through it since no one else is going to do it for us.

Do you have planning going on? Have you ever moved within a foreign country?

  1. It seems to me the process of finding a new place to live is so unique to each country, in Sweden you have to start at least a year in advance!

  2. Good luck! We just found out we might be moving again in the next few months...I'm just going to buy an RV and drive it wherever we find ourselves next. No apartment hunting required ;)

  3. Good luck with the travel and move! Beware of apartments without flooring and fixtures, though! I gather that's surprisingly common here, which can mess with budgets and timing. We're currently in the final stages of opening a wine bar, so that's taking up all of our time and focus. Today is day two of painting so the floors can go in tomorrow.

  4. Good luck Ace! I'm sure Little Man will do great. We are trying to move ourselves and nothing is available. We've been looking for a couple of months now. Moving is always so frustrating- wishing you smooth transitions!

  5. It really is a different experience! I'm not happy about waiting to really start, but at least it's not actively looking for a year!

  6. Thanks! Moving again? That's soon! I know it comes with the job, but still. Good luck this time around!

  7. Thanks! And I've been on the lookout for "upholstered" places so we don't have to deal with those issues. I can handle putting drapes or blinds up on my own, but I really don't want to supply my own laminate and kitchen..
And good luck with the wine bar! I'd love to travel up to Utrecht and visit when it's open. It could be a great date night option. =)

  8. Thanks! I know he's a good traveler, so we'll probably be fine. And good luck with your moving process. Hopefully you can find a good place soon!

  9. Good luck with the move, in the four years I lived in Spain, I moved 3 times. The first place was a share with a friend of my (now) ex, and then we moved to an apartment that went with my job, and then when we were earning more to a larger house. My advice is ask people you know whether they know of anything, or even if they recommend certain rental agents.
